I hope Metro is not planning to make this a regular occurrence - this was an emergency, unplanned inspection initiated while the system is under a watchful eye and relearning the urgency of a safety culture. The New York Subway closes parts of lines every few years for heavy maintenance and inspections - by closing those lines at 10PM and reopening at 5AM instead of running 24 hours. The reduced service is for maybe a week at a time. So by that model, Metro here would only have to close parts of lines one at a time, just a few hours early. For lines where a reasonable alternate subway service is available, no special accommodation is provided during these shutdowns. For areas where there is no alternate subway service, a bus alternate is provided for the subway route.
